First thing my colleague said was "Looks like fried rice" when I showed him the picture yesterday. And first thing another colleague said justnow was "Nasi ayam" when he saw this photo just a few minutes ago.
LOL, it's not nasi ayam la, it's my delicious Japanese potato salad.
Pasta Zanmai serves similar stuff at RM7.90 per scoop. Crazy. I tell myself may as well learn and make my own. So I googled how to make Japanese potato salad. Looks easy, and I have all the ingredients.
Just one thing - lots of chopping to do.
The ingredients are simple - potatoes, eggs, cucumber, carrots, red onion and Japanese mayo (Kewpie). Boil eggs and potatoes, mash them up, chop the remaining ingredients, and mix everything with Kewpie mayo.
And there, Japanese potato salad, no need to pay RM7.90 for a scoop to eat in restaurant already.
Out of topic, I bought this banana walnut muffin from the kedai runcit yesterday, the lady boss said just arrived, new product. When I took a bite, errr, banana essence got la, real bananas don't have. RM1.50 per piece. Can try though.
Ok, bye!
Japanese? I so love the one at our favourite Japanese restaurant here. Gotta look for the Japanese mayo now - we have a few places here selling those Japanese products, but they do not come cheap though. :(
ReplyDeleteYup, Japanese mayo is very nice, called Kewpie.. I believe Mel will love it.. Usually I just buy Ladies Choice, but I have Kewpie also, I like both actually..
DeleteLouiz, I love Japanese Potato Salad! But I have not tried making it myself. Wah, so expensive, RM7.90 per scoop? How big is the scoop? I noticed from the Japanese restaurant that I go to, they boil their carrots until soft. Quite nice also like that. Eh, I like your bowl. Hello Kitty, right? Anyway, I am happy to see a post from you today :)
ReplyDeletePhong Hong, small scoop, like ice cream scoop but smaller.. Go Pasta Zanmai order and see, no tipu.. Oh yes, Hello Kitty bowl, from Groupon :)
Deletehahaha, your colleagues are very imaginative lah, never could I associate that potato salad with fried rice and nasi ayam.. but since you mentioned that, "yao gei chee" (looks alike) woh, haha.. but hey, that's potato salad lah, more "atas" thing than rice lah~~ xD
ReplyDeleteHaha, if I didn't say, maybe people see the title, then ok la, potato salad.. But after I say, "tu kei chee" geh, wakakakaka..
DeleteI like potato salad leh, way more than mashed potatoes.. because in potato salad, you will have bits of the crunchy cucumber and carrot which I think enhance the flavor as well as the texture.. and I actually also like the potatoes to be chunky a bit than to be too mashed up la.. eih, got eggs one meh?? I think those we buy from outside no eggs lah, so good meh sell you RM7.90 one small scoop still give you egg ah?? right?? so like you, make at home la, RM7.90 can have one whole ice-cream tub of it leh..
ReplyDeleteYup, yesterday I made a big bowl, "sik dou geng" (eat until takut) already.. I think for few months, I won't crave for potato salad already..
Deletei remember my ex-colleague used to make this for us, and she puts in bits of crispy grilled bacon!! wah, I tell you, with the bacon oil in the salad, so aromatic lor, and of course with the crispy bacon it is so so nice!!! hehehehe, maybe I love bacon kot?? xD
ReplyDeleteHouse no bacon, so have to make-do without.. Internet teach put ham and a handful of corn, but house ho ham and corn also, and I don't want to purposely buy a pack of frozen corn just to make this ma.. So, just buat apa yang ada lor..
Deleteaiyah now RM1.50 a bun inclusive of GST sold in chains nationwide, cannot expect that much already lah.. banana essence, still okay kot?? once I bought a kaya bun, forgotten what brand, they use flavoring and thickener one lor, walao eh, like eating gum like that lor really have to throw away..
ReplyDeleteI everyday buy those cream buns for the boys, RM0.85, 1 week, they can eat like 10! This muffin is good for a change, but at RM1.50, call me kedekut, I rather stick back to the cream buns, haha.. This muffin for me ok la, eat once a while..
DeleteWah I want the potato salad!! Maybe I'll make some this weekend hehehe!
ReplyDeleteAiya these vacuum sealed, packaged muffins, where got real banana one? Forget it lah... at least sedap then can liao..
Ok, waiting forward for your potato salad post.. You google, lots of version.. Some put ham, corn, but I just buat apa yang ada kat rumah.. Most important is use Japanese mayo = Kewpie..
DeleteI like your bowl of potato salad too. I always love salad, be it veggie salad or fruit salad. Looking at the ingredients, all are my liking. I only afraid of the calories content in mayo.
ReplyDeleteYeah, this salad got calories from the potatoes, coz carbo.. Once a while eat nevermind la, hehe..
DeleteHi Louiz,
ReplyDeleteYeah... Knowing me, you know that I will TRY not to pay RM7.90 to eat just one scoop of potato salad and love to make it myself :D
Well done for your salad! Homemade is the best!
Zoe
Yesh !!! Homemade is the best as we can put in any "liew" we wanted.. Internet suggests ham or bacon and corn, but I didn't have any.. Well, still sedap :)
DeleteHi Louiz,
DeleteIt has been a while since you publish a blog post. How are you? Eating and sleeping well. Baby starts kicking? Do you know if she or he is a boy or a girl??? I hope everything goes well with you :)
Zoe
Yep, I'm 8 months now.. Will be due in Dec.. It's a boy - again :)
DeleteCongratulation! Take care and hope to hear lots of stories from you being the busy mum of 3 beautiful boys!
DeleteHi Louiz,
DeleteAre you getting nearer to your delivery day? Still tired? No mojo to blog? Keep chomping all the food at my blog! Glad that you like them :)
Best of luck!
Zoe
Never tried the potato salad before, I think my girl will love this... any Japanese she will be delighted.. thanks for sharing.. will let her know .. just now in the mall I came across the Kewpie mayo...
ReplyDeleteKewpie mayo sedap to the max !!
DeleteI didn't know so many veges go into the making of the Japanese potato salad....I love any potato salad!
ReplyDeleteI don't like the chopping.. Internet suggests ham/bacon and corn too, but I didn't have any... Yes, the one served at Pasta Zanmai got more veggies than mine, all crunchy and chunky ones :)
DeleteI loves potato salad, will make it one of the day if i am not lazy...
ReplyDeleteLots of chopping, need to chop into small pieces, sigh..
DeleteI like potato salad and mash potato too
ReplyDeleteThis one is nice, hubby also says nice, more refreshing, not so 'nau'..
DeleteGood for you to look up how to make this and prepare this at home, no need to eat out for this. So the carrot is eaten raw too after chopping it up and mixing it into the mashed potatoes and eggs?
ReplyDeleteInternet suggests chopping the carrots, add some water and microwave at high under 1 minute, but I dont have a microwave, so I boiled the carrots for 1 minute..
DeleteIt looked like mashed potato to me, first impression. Your colleagues so funny. Where got look like rice??
ReplyDeleteIf can make it, then it save a lot. No need spend so much of food. ;) Healthy too as you know what you add in your food.
Yes, correct, rm7.90 for a spoon of potato salad is so expensive to me.. Not logic, haha, but I know we are paying for the ambience and brand name..
DeleteAhhh.... tried this before at the malls whenever I ordered soup. Anyway, I prefer BBQ Japanese potato ...more yummy especially on a cold night!
ReplyDeleteMore work la that one, but I like it too, with lots lots butter, yummzzz..
DeleteNice! It does look like fried rice though. Haha!
ReplyDeleteI love potato salad, especially cold ones. Wonderful in our hot climate.
Oh yes, cold ones sedap, with lots of mayo and onions, crunchy..
DeleteYum! I'll love to eat some now. Haha! :D
DeleteIt does looks like fried rice to me leh. LOL
ReplyDeleteWah, really ahh, lol.. Now you all say like that, I try to imagine, looks a bit also la, due to the colour/lighting.. haha.
DeleteIt do really looks like fried rice, but I guess taste is the matter, and I pretty sure the taste must be awesome!!
ReplyDeleteGot potatoes+cucumber cruch+mayo+onions taste.. Not much of carrot or egg taste.. I really like it, especially if eaten cold :)
DeleteHow are you dear? How many weeks preggie jo? Me macam too left out liao, haih, busy busy.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, your potato salad looks good leh! Yea lots of chopping but hey, susah first then we get to enjoy later right? hehe!
Me ahh, now week 32 liao.. Due in Dec.. Me getting lazy to update my blog to be honest.. Sigh..
DeleteJapanese potato salad? Never try before but looks yummy! And the last part of your post...the out of topic part...it took me a few seconds to digest before I realize it's totally an unrelated topic from the post. Haha!! Nicely written there! ;-)
ReplyDeleteHaha, yes, out of topic, coz I was suddenly talking about banana walnut muffins..
DeletePotato salad is good for health and has good nutrition. I want to try this but firstly I have to get my door repair done before I use my kitchen again. Any good recommendations?
